The honest comparison · Telemetry

Sensors measure values. People see more.

Telemetry is the right answer when machine data reveals the fault. But a sensor sees no graffiti, no water stain, no empty dispenser — and retrofitting one is far from worthwhile on every device. The QR reporting path turns the person standing at the device into the reporter: no hardware, no integration, for any type of device. Here is the sober comparison.

What sensors can do

Where telemetry excels — and where it ends.

Honesty first here too: for machine data, telemetry is unbeatable. Temperature, run times, error codes, fill levels — anyone operating a high-value system whose condition can be measured gets an early-warning system out of sensors that no person replaces.

The limit runs where the fault can't be measured: vandalism, soiling, a smell, a noise, missing restock, a bollard someone drove into. And it runs at the effort involved — sensors have to be chosen, fitted, connected and operated for every type of device. For the coffee machine on the third floor, the soap dispenser or the car park barrier, that rarely adds up.

  • Strong: continuous readings, early warning, high-value individual systems
  • Blind: everything you have to see, smell or hear — and everything that's missing rather than broken
  • Costly: dedicated hardware, connection and operation for every type of device

Retrofit or attach?

From the event to the report — two routes.

The question is the same both times: how does your service team find out that something is wrong? The answers could hardly be more different.

Retrofitting telemetry

An integration project per type of device

  1. 01 Select and source sensors for each type of device
  2. 02 Sort out installation, power supply and connectivity
  3. 03 Build and test the connection to your systems
  4. 04 Carry operation, maintenance and SIM / network costs on an ongoing basis
  5. 05 And: only what's measurable gets reported

The right route for high-end systems — rarely economical across a broad estate.

QR reporting path (ServiceID)

Attach the report points — done

  1. 01 Report point on the device — it knows the device and the location
  2. 02 Whoever notices something scans and picks the topic
  3. 03 The report arrives structured with the right team

Every device becomes reportable — including the ones no sensor would ever pay off on.

Not either/or: on systems that already have telemetry, the report point adds everything the sensors don't see.

Thought of together

The best answer is often both.

The two routes rarely compete — they cover different floors of the same problem. The production line under a maintenance contract keeps its telemetry. The rest of the estate — vending machines, dispensers, doors, lighting, outdoor areas — becomes reportable via a report point, without a technician ever having to open a device.

And even on a system with telemetry the report point has a job: it gives the people standing in front of it a channel for everything the sensor doesn't see. The report lands in the same mailbox as all the others — one reporting path, one process, one set of analytics.

  • Keep telemetry where it runs — the report point replaces nothing that works
  • Make the rest of the estate reportable — without a hardware project
  • One consistent intake for both: structured, documented, ready to analyse

Frequently asked questions

Telemetry and QR reporting — in brief.

Does ServiceID need power, a radio link or a connection to the device?

No. The report point sits weatherproof on the outside of the device — no electronics, no fitting, no SIM card. The intelligence sits in the platform behind it: every report point knows its device and its location.

We already have telemetry on our systems. What does a report point add?

A channel for everything the sensors don't capture: external damage, soiling, vandalism, missing restock — reported by the people who are standing in front of the system anyway. The reports run into the same mailboxes as your other cases.

Which devices are worth which approach?

As a rule of thumb: where continuous readings decide downtime and maintenance and the device is high in value, sensors pay off. Where faults are visible and people pass by, the report point is enough — at a fraction of the effort. If you're unsure, we're happy to go through your estate with you.

What does the QR reporting path cost?

From €0.50 per device and month, plus a one-time setup fee based on scope — no contract lock-in, no hardware investment. Included are the report points, configuration per location, delivery, documentation and analytics.

How quickly is the estate reportable?

As soon as topics and recipients are settled, we produce your report points — mounting means sticking or screwing them on. From order to a running system usually takes about two weeks; there is no integration project.
